Cooler dinner
Pizza you can eat with one hand while the second half starts.
Your kid grabs a pinwheel off the bench, dips it in the little marinara cup, and never misses a play.
They taste like pizza, they pack flat, and they hold up cold in the cooler for the whole game.
Ingredients
For cooler pizza pinwheel boxes, expect fills 4 boxes, about 16 pinwheels and about 30 minutes from start to finish.
- 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent dough sheet or pizza dough
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce, plus extra for dipping
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella
- 24 slices pepperoni
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 egg, beaten, for brushing
How to Make It
Start cooler pizza pinwheel boxes with the part that takes longest, because practice night will not wait.
- Heat the oven to 375F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle and spread the pizza sauce nearly to the edges.
- Sprinkle on the mozzarella, lay down the pepperoni, and dust with Italian seasoning.
- Roll the dough into a tight log from the long side, then slice it into 16 rounds.
- Set the rounds cut side up on the sheet, brush with egg, and bake 12 to 15 minutes until golden. Cool fully before packing.
Pack It Cold and Tidy
These have cheese and pepperoni baked in, so once they cool they ride cold to stay safe.
- Cool the pinwheels completely, then pack them against two ice packs
- Keep cold food at 40F or below, and do not leave it out longer than 2 hours
- An insulated bag keeps them firm and the cheese set
What Stays Crisp (and What Gets Soggy)
Pinwheels travel well on their own; the dipping sauce is the only thing that needs its own home.
- Pack the dipping sauce in a sealed cup so the pinwheels stay dry
- Lay them flat in a single layer so they keep their shape
- Add a napkin; the cheese can be a little greasy in a good way
- Serve with: a side of marinara, carrot sticks
Parent Tip
Chill the rolled log for 10 minutes before slicing; cold dough cuts into cleaner rounds.

Small Tweaks That Help This Dinner Land
Make them cheese only
Skip the pepperoni for a plain pinwheel younger kids will eat happily.
Add cooked sausage
Crumbled Italian sausage gives the pinwheels a heartier bite.
Swap in ham and cheese
A milder filling that still bakes up golden and pull-apart.
Sprinkle parmesan on top
A dusting before baking adds a salty, crisp crust.
Go veggie
Add finely chopped peppers and spinach for color and a meatless box.
