Before practice
Ten little sliders, one pan, and a tableful of kids who actually slow down to eat.
The meat browns while you split the buns, and the whole thing is plated in under half an hour.
Sliders are the right size for a kid who needs to eat fast and run.
Ingredients
The ingredient list for sloppy joe slider plates assumes serves 4 to 5 (makes about 10 sliders) and about 25 minutes.
- 1 lb lean ground beef (90/10)
- 1/2 cup finely diced onion
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 10 slider buns or dinner rolls
How to Make It
A practical batch should leave the kitchen calmer than it found it when making sloppy joe slider plates.
- Brown the beef and onion over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat, 6 to 7 minutes, until no pink remains.
- Drain off any excess fat, then lower the heat to medium.
- Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire, garlic powder, and salt.
- Simmer 5 minutes, stirring, until the sauce is thick and glossy.
- Spoon onto the bottom buns and cap with the tops; serve while warm.
Timing Before Practice
Start about 30 minutes before you need to leave so the sliders are done and not rushed.
- T-minus 30: brown the beef and onion
- T-minus 20: add the sauce and simmer
- T-minus 10: split buns, spoon, plate, eat
Make It Ahead or Save Leftovers
The meat mix reheats better than it cooks fresh, so a make-ahead batch is a real win.
- Cook the meat a day ahead and chill it flat
- Store the filling and buns separately so nothing goes soggy
- Reheat the meat in a skillet with a splash of water
- Serve with: baby carrots, apple slices, a glass of milk
Parent Tip
Keep a few buns plain with just meat for the kid who wants nothing fancy on it.
Make It Fit Tonight
Small Tweaks That Help This Dinner Land
Add a cheese melt
Lay a half-slice of cheddar on the hot meat so it melts before the bun goes on.
Sneak in vegetables
Stir in 1/2 cup finely grated carrot with the onion; it cooks down invisibly.
Go turkey
Swap in lean ground turkey for a lighter slider before a hard practice.
Make a baked-potato topper
Skip the buns and spoon the meat over split microwaved potatoes.
Set up a slider bar
Put out pickles and shredded cheese so each kid finishes their own.
