When Your Child Is Not Hungry After Practice

Offer something liquid rather than pressing solid food. A smoothie, a carton of milk, or a yogurt drink delivers carbohydrate and protein without asking a closed stomach to chew. Appetite usually returns within an hour, so plan a second offer rather than a single one.

Why hard exercise closes an appetite

Intense exertion temporarily blunts hunger in many people, and heat, dehydration, and nerves all deepen the effect. A kid who has just run for ninety minutes in August is not being difficult.

It typically lifts within thirty to sixty minutes, which is the whole basis of the approach below.

What to offer when food is refused

Offer once, without pressure, and leave it within reach. A refused plate that stays on the table often gets eaten twenty minutes later when nobody is watching.

Cincinnati Children's notes that fruit digests easily and is unlikely to cause stomach upset, which makes it a reasonable first solid offer.

  • Fluid first, always. Rehydration often reopens appetite on its own.
  • Offer, then stop asking. Repeated prompting tends to close things further.
  • Keep it cool and light rather than hot and heavy.
  • Leave something reachable for later in the evening.

Drinking it instead

When solid food is genuinely off the table, a drink with something in it is the answer that gets used most and discussed least.

The bar is low and practical: something with carbohydrate, something with a little protein, and a temperature your kid will accept.

Works

  • Milk or chocolate milk straight from the cooler.
  • A smoothie made before you left and kept cold.
  • A yogurt drink.
  • Water first, then any of the above.

Usually does not

  • A hot meal pressed within ten minutes of finishing.
  • Anything greasy.
  • A large volume offered all at once.
  • A new drink introduced on a hard evening.

Trying again later the same evening

Plan two offers rather than one. The second, roughly an hour after finishing, is the one that usually lands.

By then appetite has generally returned and a normal meal is possible, which is why having something already made matters so much on these evenings.

How long since practice finished?

Under thirty minutes
Fluid only, plus anything cold and light they will take. Do not push a meal.
About an hour
Try solid food. A normal, familiar, not-too-large plate is the right offer here.
It is now bedtime and nothing has been eaten
Something small and easy: toast, cereal, yogurt, milk. Getting something in beats getting the right thing in.

When lost appetite is worth a clinician

One session with no appetite is normal. Every session, for weeks, is worth investigating, particularly alongside tiredness, weight change, or a kid who has stopped enjoying the sport.

Take it to a pediatric clinician or a registered dietitian. Appetite loss has causes that a food plan cannot address and should not be used to paper over.

Questions about a closed appetite

Should I make my kid eat after practice?

No. Offer, leave it available, and try again an hour later. Pressing tends to make refusal more entrenched.

Is skipping the post-practice meal harmful?

Occasionally missing it is not a crisis. It matters more on back-to-back competition days, when the evening between them is doing real work.

Does dehydration affect appetite?

It can, which is why fluid first is the standard first move. Rehydrating often reopens the appetite without any further intervention.
