Friday School Day Into a Tournament Weekend
Friday is a packing day, not a performance day. Feed normally, get the shopping done on Thursday, pack the cooler on Friday night, and keep Friday dinner to food your family already eats. The tournament is won or lost on Saturday logistics, not on Friday nutrition.
What Friday has to set up
Friday's job is preparation. The food that matters on Saturday is bought, cooked, or packed on Friday, and the meal itself is unremarkable on purpose.
Clinic guidance on the night before competition is consistent and dull in the best way: a carbohydrate-forward meal, plenty of fluid, and enough sleep.
Food for the Friday drive
If the tournament involves travelling on Friday evening, the drive is where plans quietly turn into a drive-through.
Pack the car food before you pack anything else.
- Dinner in a container if you are eating in the car, rather than deciding at a service station.
- Water for everyone, not just the athlete.
- Something dry for the last hour, when everyone is bored rather than hungry.
- A rubbish bag, because a car you will live in tomorrow needs to start clean.
Packing Friday night for Saturday
Saturday morning packing is how families end up buying three meals at a concession stand. Everything that can be done at 8:00 on Friday should be.
Cooler first
Ice packs in the freezer Friday afternoon, cooler loaded Friday night, drinks in last.
Breakfast decided
Whatever Saturday breakfast is, it is out on the counter before you go to bed.
Kit and food in the same trip
One list, checked once, so nothing needs a second trip to the house.
What to buy Thursday
Buy for the whole weekend on Thursday: the Friday dinner, the cooler contents, and the between-games food. Friday evening shopping is how a plan turns into whatever the shop had left.
Stick to food your family already eats. Tournament weekends punish novelty, and the standard clinic advice before competition is explicitly to avoid new foods.
When the tournament is far enough to need a hotel
A hotel changes the problem: no kitchen, a small fridge if you are lucky, and a breakfast buffet that may or may not exist at 6:30.
Bring the first breakfast with you rather than trusting the hotel, and check whether the room has a fridge before you plan anything perishable.
Questions about the Friday-into-Saturday run
Should Friday dinner be a big pasta meal?
Carbohydrate-forward is the standard guidance, and Nationwide Children's frames the night before as a high-carbohydrate meal with plenty of fluids and a good night's sleep. Big is less important than familiar.
Is it worth carb-loading a ten-year-old?
No. Loading protocols are for endurance adults. A normal carbohydrate-forward dinner is the whole of it for youth sport.
What if we are eating out on Friday night?
Order what your kid orders normally. The rule that matters is not introducing a new food the night before competition.
