Rest Day Meals

A rest day is when the household eats properly, not when it eats less. Sit down at a normal hour, cook something the week did not have time for, and use the evening to prepare the two hardest nights ahead.

What a rest day is actually for

In a heavy week, four evenings are spent eating around a schedule. The fifth is the one where a family can eat at a table, at a normal time, together.

That has more value than any adjustment to the food itself.

Eating normally on a day off

Some parents reduce portions on rest days on the theory that less activity needs less food. For growing kids in a season that is not a change worth making, and it tends to produce a hungry evening.

Serve normally and let appetite do the adjusting.

Catching up on what the week missed

Practice-night dinners are, by necessity, fast and beige. A rest day is where the rest of the diet happens.

  • Something green that nobody had time to cook on Tuesday.
  • A meal that needs twenty minutes of attention.
  • Cook double, so Thursday is already handled.
  • Sit down together, which is the part that actually gets missed.

Rest days that are not really rest days

A day with no team practice often still has a lesson, a gym session, or a match for another sport. That is not a rest day and should not be planned as one.

Look at what your kid is actually doing rather than at what the team calendar says.

What is actually happening on the day off?

Genuinely nothing
Normal meals, a proper dinner hour, and prep for the two hardest nights ahead.
A light or unofficial session
Treat it as a practice day with a longer runway. Feed normally and keep dinner at a sane hour.
A different sport entirely
This is a training day wearing a day-off label. Plan it as one.

When there are no rest days left

Some seasons genuinely have seven busy days. That is worth noticing rather than absorbing, because it removes the day the household was using to reset.

If a stretch like that runs for weeks and your kid seems tired, run-down, or is eating unusually little, that is a reasonable thing to raise with your pediatric clinician rather than to plan around indefinitely.

Questions about rest days

Should my kid eat less on a rest day?

Not deliberately. Growing kids in a season generally do better eating normally and letting appetite adjust itself.

Is a rest day the right time for a big meal?

It is the right time for a proper one, eaten at a normal hour. Size matters less than the calm.

What if the rest day is the only day for everything else?

Then cook double on it. One extra portion made on the calm day removes the worst night of the following week.
