Freezer Meals for Tournament Weekends

A tournament weekend runs on a hotel microwave and a cooler in the trunk, and freezer meals for tournament weekends packed right can carry a family from Friday night through Sunday's 8:10 game.

The hotel room has a microwave and no stove, and that decides the entire weekend's food.

Three games over two days, a hotel two hours from home, and a kitchen that amounts to one microwave bolted above a mini fridge. Whatever you bring has to survive a car ride, a cooler, and reheating with nothing but that microwave.

Frozen meals solve two problems at once here. They are dinner, and while they are still solid they work as their own ice, keeping the cooler cold for the whole drive without a separate bag of ice melting into everything else.

Pack the frozen meals as their own ice

A frozen 8x8 pan of enchiladas or a couple of quart bags of chili, still rock solid when they go in the cooler Friday morning, keep the rest of the cooler cold through a four-hour drive without needing a separate bag of ice. By dinnertime Friday, they have thawed just enough to reheat.

Pack the meal you plan to eat Sunday morning at the bottom, where it stays coldest longest, and the Friday-night meal near the top where you can grab it first.

The hotel microwave is the only appliance you get

No stovetop, no oven, sometimes not even a full-size fridge, just a microwave and whatever counter space is next to the coffee maker. Chili, mac and cheese, a burrito, and rice-and-chicken bowls all reheat fine in a microwave; a lasagna that needs a crisped top does not.

Bring a couple of paper plates and plastic forks from home, because the hotel usually has neither, and a wet paper towel over the container keeps the microwave from splattering all over.

  • Chili or soup in a deli quart, microwaved covered.
  • A burrito wrapped in a damp paper towel, two minutes, flip once.
  • Mac and cheese in its own microwave-safe tub.
  • Rice and shredded chicken with a splash of water before heating.

Saturday night, back at the hotel, exhausted

Three games in and everyone is running on adrenaline fumes by 7 p.m. This is not the night to go looking for a restaurant with a nine-year-old who is already asleep sitting up. Pull the second frozen meal out of the cooler, microwave it in the room, and everyone is fed and in bed by 8:30.

Sunday morning before the 8:10 game

An 8:10 first game means leaving the hotel by 7:15, which does not leave room for a sit-down breakfast anywhere. A frozen breakfast burrito or muffin, pulled from the cooler and microwaved for ninety seconds in the room, gets eaten between the hotel lobby and the parking lot at the complex.

Pack two per kid. The first tournament of the season is when you learn a nine-year-old under pressure eats half a burrito and asks for the second one at 7:50.

What to leave out of the cooler entirely

Anything with mayonnaise, cream sauce, or soft cheese that needs to stay under 40 degrees the whole weekend is a bad bet in a cooler that gets opened a dozen times a day. Stick to fully cooked, freezer-solid meals that only need reheating, not anything that was cold and raw to begin with.

Tonight

Six dinners that hold up on a night like this

Chicken burritos

Wrap, label, freeze. Reheat one per kid and you never have to invent dinner.

Taco meat packs

A pound of cooked taco meat becomes tacos tonight, baked potatoes Thursday, nachos next week.

Turkey chili cups

Single portions thaw by the time you get home, no giant pot to babysit on a late night.

Pasta bake squares

Slice it into squares before it freezes, and every portion comes out the same size.

Breakfast burritos

Doesn't matter how late practice runs. Two minutes in the microwave and nobody complains.

Pulled chicken packs

Same chicken, different night: buns one time, tortillas the next, rice after that.
