When the Game Starts Late
Move dinner to before the game rather than after it. Eat at 4:30, keep it low in fat, send a small snack for the ground, and have something light and warm ready at home so the post-game meal is not a decision made at 9:30.
When the game starts after dinner should have
A 6:30 or 7:00 kick-off puts warm-up exactly where dinner normally sits. Families who try to hold dinner until afterwards end up eating at 9:15 with a child who is too tired to chew.
The fix is to move the meal, not to delay it.
Moving dinner earlier
Dinner at 4:30 feels wrong the first time and normal by the third. The requirement is that it finishes at least two hours before warm-up, which is the standard clinic gap between a full meal and playing.
Keep it lower in fat than a usual dinner so it settles.
How much time is there between getting home and leaving again?
An hour or more
Twenty minutes

What to eat at the ground
By kick-off the meal is done and the job is fluid plus, at most, something small before warm-up.
The concession stand at a late game is a trap: chips and a hot dog at 6:15 will be felt at 6:45.
- Water in the bag, filled at home.
- One small dry thing for the wait, if the start slips.
- Nothing fried before playing.
- Something for immediately after the whistle, because that is when hunger arrives.
Getting home and to bed
The post-game meal at 8:45 should be small, warm, and already decided. Anything that requires cooking at that hour turns into a takeaway or into nothing.
A bowl of soup, leftovers reheated, or beans on toast all do the job better than an ambitious plate.
When late games are every week
One late game is an evening to absorb. A season of them is a routine to build, and the early-dinner shape should become the default rather than the exception.
If your kid is regularly getting to bed very late and is tired through the school week, that is worth raising with the coach and, if it persists, with your clinician.
Questions about late kick-offs
Is eating at 4:30 too early?
Not for a 6:30 start. The standard guidance is to allow roughly two hours between a full meal and playing, which puts dinner in the late afternoon.
Should they eat a full meal after a late game?
Usually not. Something small and warm works better than a full plate at 9:00, and the bigger meal was already eaten before the game.
What about school the next day?
Prepare the next morning before you leave for the game. Lunches packed and clothes out is what makes a late finish survivable.
