Second Dinner After a Late Practice

Serve a real dinner before practice and a smaller warm one afterwards. Splitting the meal deliberately beats holding a hungry kid until 8:45 and then watching them fall asleep over a full plate.

Second dinner is a plan, not a failure

Parents often treat a second meal as evidence that the evening went wrong. On a night when practice ends at 8:15, it is simply the shape that fits.

Named in advance, it is a routine. Improvised at 9:00, it is a bowl of whatever.

What the first dinner should be

The pre-practice meal carries most of the evening, so it should look like a real dinner rather than a snack: carbohydrate-forward, moderate protein, low in fat so it settles before the session.

Serve it early enough that there is roughly a two-hour gap before playing.

What the second one should be

Small, warm, familiar, and requiring nothing more than a microwave or a kettle. Anything that needs a pan will not happen.

  • Soup, beans on toast, leftovers, a small pasta bowl, or scrambled eggs.
  • Portioned before you left, so it is a two-minute job.
  • Warm rather than heavy, which sits better before sleep.
  • Milk or yogurt as the fallback if even that is too much.

Eating late and sleeping well

A large late meal can make sleep worse, which on a school night costs more than the meal gains. Small and warm is the balance most families land on.

Leave a gap of at least half an hour between the second dinner and lights out where you can.

How long between getting home and bedtime?

Over an hour
A proper small meal works. Reheated leftovers, soup, eggs on toast.
About thirty minutes
Keep it very light: toast, yogurt, a banana, milk. Enough to sleep on, not enough to sit heavily.
They are already asleep
Let them sleep and make breakfast bigger. One missed meal after a hard night is not worth waking a child for.

When second dinner becomes the only dinner

If the first meal is being skipped regularly because of the schedule, the split has quietly collapsed into one very late meal. That is worth correcting, because a kid training at 6:30 on nothing since lunch is under-fuelled for the session itself.

Move the first meal earlier, even if it feels absurdly early, rather than accepting a single 8:45 dinner as the plan.

Questions about splitting dinner

Is eating twice in an evening too much food?

Not when the two are sized for it. Two smaller meals across an evening is much the same total as one large one, and it fits a training schedule better.

Is eating late bad for sleep?

A large heavy meal close to bed can disrupt sleep. Something small and warm generally does not, and is better than going to bed hungry after training.

What if my kid will not eat before practice?

Then the second meal is doing more work and should be a little larger. Persistent refusal to eat before activity is worth mentioning to your clinician.
