Practice-Night Dinners for Families With Toddlers Too

Sports-night dinners with a toddler in the mix mean the two-year-old is having the hardest evening of anyone, strapped in a car seat at the exact hour she normally falls apart.

The toddler did not sign up for this season and it shows at 5:30.

Your ten-year-old has practice at 5:45. Your two-year-old has dinner at 5:30 and a hard bedtime at 7:15, and neither of those is negotiable with her.

So she eats in a car seat in a parking lot, and the older one eats at 8:00, and you eat crackers. That is the actual shape of this stage and there is no version where it is elegant.

What makes it survivable is feeding the toddler first and completely, before anybody gets in the car, because a fed toddler in a parking lot is a different child.

She eats at 5:00, at the table, before the car

Feed the toddler on her clock, not the team's. Five o'clock, in a high chair, with a real plate, twelve minutes, done. Then the car ride is just a car ride.

Trying to shift a two-year-old's dinner to 6:45 to match the family is a fight you will lose every Tuesday for eleven weeks.

What is safe to hand back in a moving car

Choking risk goes up when a small child eats unsupervised, and in a car seat behind you there is nobody watching her at all. This is the one place on a practice night to be genuinely careful rather than convenient.

The American Academy of Pediatrics keeps a list of the foods most often involved in choking for under-fours, and whole grapes, hot dog rounds, popcorn, nuts, hard raw carrot, and chunks of cheese are all on it. If you are unsure about your own child, ask her pediatrician rather than guessing at a field.

  • Grapes quartered lengthwise, never whole.
  • Soft things she has eaten before: banana, cut-up pancake, puffs.
  • Nothing round, nothing hard, nothing she has to work at.
  • If you can, feed her before the car and hand back a water cup instead.

The sideline bag has three things in it

A ninety-minute practice with a toddler at the edge of a field needs less equipment than people bring and more than what fits in a coat pocket.

A blanket to sit on, a snack she likes, and one small toy she has not seen in a week. Everything else is optional and you are already carrying too much.

Bedtime beats watching the drills

You do not have to stay for the whole practice. Drop off at 5:45, go home, do bath and bedtime properly, come back at 7:10.

The ten-year-old does not need you standing there and the two-year-old genuinely needs her 7:15. Fifteen minutes of driving is a good trade for a toddler who goes down without a fight.

Feed yourself while you feed her

You are going to be in the kitchen at 5:00 anyway. Make two plates instead of one and eat standing up next to the high chair.

Otherwise the day ends with you eating a handful of shredded cheese over the sink at 9:15, which is a thing that happens to nearly everybody in this stage.

Tonight

Six dinners that hold up on a night like this

Quesadilla plate plus fruit

One pan, ten minutes. Half goes down before practice and the rest waits on the counter for when they walk back in starving.

Rice bowl bar

Rice, chicken or beans, cucumbers, cheese, sauce cups. Everyone builds their own, so the kid who hates anything touching gets a clean plate.

Soup cup with bread

Pour it into a thermos before you leave. Whoever sits down at 7:40 still gets it hot, and you washed one pot.

Breakfast tacos

You can scramble eggs and warm tortillas in less time than a drive-thru line, and it runs about a dollar a kid.

Freezer burrito backup

Move one to the fridge in the morning. Write the reheat time on the foil and the hardest part of the night is already done.

Pasta box with sauce separate

Use penne or rotini so it holds its shape. The sauce rides in its own cup and nothing goes soggy on the way over.
